Chapter Nineteen

It was a beautiful day for humans. The sun was out and shining; it was warm with a gentle breeze.

Vy would have preferred it to be overcast. She made sure to keep her skin out of direct sunlight. While she wouldn’t spontaneously combust into flames in the daylight, like a normal fang would, she was still sensitive to the rays.

Her skinned blistered if not covered, and bright days rendered her near blind unless she wore heavy tinted sunglasses.

Despite having been in the country less than a day, Vy was taking a liking to Japan. The roads and sidewalks were orderly and clean. The people were very polite and kept to themselves.

Vy had fully expected the nationals to stare and gawk at her and Petra. Together they made an odd pair, and they both stood out. Petra towered over everyone, and Vy’s skin tone was shades darker than the homogenized population.

But nobody stared. Nobody spared them a second glance. Frankly, it seemed to Vy that the Japanese went out of their way to not acknowledge them.

Vy and Petra proceeded in silence towards the station. Once there, they boarded a bus headed for Tokyo.

Vy sat at the window seat. Petra took the aisle seat.

The human was still in a dark mood. She hadn’t said a word since they’d left the hotel room, and Vy knew Petra’s sour disposition had everything to do with what had happened that morning.

Closing her eyes, Vy recalled being awoken to strong arms wrapping around her, pulling her in close. At the time, Vy had been shocked, and the urge to pull away had been immediate. She’d thought about wriggling out of the embrace, but only for a second.

Where cuddles were concerned, Vy’s will was always weak. Starved for connection as she was, Vy looked forward to postcoital snuggles with her lovers as much as the act of sex itself.

Though Dustin’s influence on her was likely the only reason she hadn’t bolted the moment Petra’s hard body had pressed against her back. It was maddening how much Vy had wanted Petra. Vy wasn’t used to being in bed with someone she couldn’t have. It had taken every ounce of her resolve to not act on what her body desired.

But then, Petra had whispered the name “Kate” in her sleep, and Vy’s senses had returned along with a searing jealously.

Kate was beautiful. Kate mattered to Petra. Kate was human. Vy could not compete—not that she should even want to.

Petra had stabbed her. Petra wanted her dead. Petra was the last woman Vy should want.

Not long after uttering the name, Petra jerked awake and dashed into the bathroom.

Her retreat had been a relief for Vy, who had needed time to herself to sort out her own feelings from Dustin’s. The task had proved impossible.

Staring out of the large bus window, Vy watched the passing rural landscape. It was agrarian and lush, but the beauty of the scenery was not enough to hold Vy’s attention. Her mind kept turning to Kate—the stunning Asian woman she’d caught Petra social media stalking.
